Warming up

The main reason for taking time off at this time was to go berry-picking & learn how to make jam with my folks. I guess I wanted to test the waters when I ended up with 2 pounds of strawberries that I decided should be made into jam before any berry-picking dates were set.

Surprisingly, the texture of my first jam is pretty darn good, though I have to admit the jam is a little sweeter than I’d like. Mom arrived after the fact & mentioned I should have removed the foam instead of canning it.  No doubt it will get eaten (who can say no to peanut butter & strawberry jam sandwiches)?Image

I harvested a few Fava beans from my garden as well. I had to boil them for 30 seconds then place them in an ice bath to remove the light sheath- this is how they looked. I have to say they are a rather refreshing bean just as they are. I’m glad I’ve got a few more to experiment with; I’m sure they’d liven up a salad or stir-fry.
